Cookies, Cookies, Cookies - Everywhere I look there are cookies!
Girl Scout cookies, Crumbl cookies, Mrs. Fields Cookies, in the grocery store, Subway Sandwich cookies, in the local bakery … everywhere I look there are cookies. Are they my favorite dessert? For an on-the-go sweet treat, I would have to say yes. And, if there’s time I enjoy sitting down for a break with a shortbread cookie with a lovely cup of hot tea. OR Chocolate chip cookie with walnuts with a soothing class of milk. I like mine to be soft and gooey with tons of chocolate chips. OR Peanut butter cookies with a cup of decaf coffee. Soft and gooey is the order of the day here as well.
In spite of having a serious sweet tooth, I actually don’t like my cookies to have too much sugar. When baking at home, I frequently cut the recommended sugar amount by 1/3 or even by ½. It does change the magic formula slightly, but I’m willing to defy the scientific side of baking in favor of better flavor and fewer calories. It’s a matter of personal preference.
This time of year, it’s hard to go anywhere without encountering an adorable Girl Scout urging any passerby to purchase cookies. It can be hard to say “no”. This year the Girl Scouts have outdone themselves with bringing back traditional favorites like Thin Mints, Trefoils and Peanut Butter Sandwiches. There’s a gluten free one called Toffee-tastic described on their website as “rich, buttery cookies with sweet, crunchy toffee bits”. And if your diet is guided by Kosher or Halal needs, all of the cookies will fit your needs.
They’ve added a new flavor this year called “Exploremores”. Inspired by Rocky Road ice cream, it has chocolate, marshmallow and toasted almond crème. For me, it will have to wait till next year before I try them.
Here’s my conundrum. I like to help worthy causes like the Girl scouts. However, if I buy the cookies, I will more than likely eat some before I even get home. So, how do I help but avoid the temptation to eat? Many troops will deliver donated boxes of cookies to charities like Manna. You can also ask if your troop can send your donated boxes to military service people serving overseas. I don’t know if your local food bank will accept unopened boxes but that might be worth a call.
As I write this blog, I’m seriously tempted to indulge myself but I know I’ll regret it tomorrow when I step on the scale so, for now, I think I’ll go for a walk ….. just not past the girl scout booth!
