Eating takes time
During the data gathering portion of my plan, I learned a lot about myself and my eating habits. One of the things I’ve discovered is that I have a tendency to eat on the go. My life seems to be busy from dawn to dusk (or later), and I often wind up grabbing something (anything) to eat in my car as I commute to the office or go to various appointments.
In the morning, I tend to grab something like toast and peanut butter which I eat as I load or unload the dishwasher or do other mindless, mundane tasks. Now it’s not that the toast (seeded bread) and peanut butter (organic, of course) are bad in themselves. I don’t think that’s a terrible breakfast, especially if I pair it with a handful of organic blueberries (remember the rainbow?) and ½ glass of skim milk. It’s mostly that I barely acknowledge that I’m even consuming calories. My mind is thinking ahead to my schedule for the day. If I have a martial arts class, I have to check for my uniform, shoes and gear…. and that ever-present water bottle.
If I’m driving any distance, is my gas tank full? You get the picture.
Nutrition experts uniformly say that conscious eating is one key to healthy eating. So, I’ve realized that eating right takes time and if I’m going to be successful (which I most definitely am!), I need to take the time to eat right. Chew every bite. Be a conscious consumer of calories.
NOTE TO SELF: Try getting up 10 minutes earlier in the morning to sit and enjoy that first meal of the day.
